AVG 7.5 Technical FAQ » E-mail scanner on workstations » General questions
If AVG Control Center displays an error message “E-mail scanner is not fully functional”, please left-click the E-mail Scanner window (the red one), in the bottom part of the AVG Control Center window you will see a detailed description of why the E-mail scanner does not work properly. The following reason may occur:
Plugin for The Bat! program is not installed
In this case you have installed the AVG plug-in for this e-mail program, but you do not have the e-mail program installed. In that case you do not need the plug-in for The Bat!, you should uninstall it - it only uselessly uses hard drive space and system resources. Un-installation process is described here.
IIf any other error message occurs, please contact our technical support and describe the problem in detail.
Instructions:
Please, run the AVG Control Center, choose the E-mail scanner component and press the Properties button. Here, please, select the correct plug-in (mentioned for the email program you use) and press the Configure button. The above mentioned settings can be specified in the column Remove files with these extensions (extensions must be divided by a comma so it will look like: exe, bat, scr)
Since version AVG 7.0.250 we have enabled filtering of password protected files attached to e-mails( available for mail scanning only). These types of archive files are often used to distribute viruses i.e. I-Worm/Bagle virus, etc. The content of these files cannot be scanned because AVG cannot extract archive files protected by a password. You can set up the AVG E-mail Scanner so that it will automatically delete these types of archive files from your mail.
Please do the following steps:
- Open AVG Control Center program
- Double-click the E-mail Scanner window
- Press Configure button
- At the Scanning properties frame please enable the Automatically move password protected archives to the Virus Vault checkbox
- Confirm the new setting by pressing the OK button
You can use EICAR.COM test-virus for this purpose. You can download this file from our website or directly from the www.eicar.org website – the developer of this file. This file can be found on the AVG installation CD (OLD\FILES\EICAR.ZIP). EICAR.ZIP file is password-protected and the password is EICAR (the password is case-sensitive, it is necessary to use capital letters). This file is NOT a real virus, it is developed for testing purposes only and every antivirus system should report a virus on this file. AVG detects it as EICAR-Test virus.
Please let us inform you that it is not possible to work with the test file if the AVG Resident Shield is active. Please see our FAQ: How to disable the AVG temporarily to deactivate the Resident Shield.
It’s important to choose the correct e-mail plug-in to install during the AVG installation process. It depends on your e-mail client. If you use an email client for sending/receiving e-mails which has its own plug-in specified by AVG.
Please install this plug-in in preference:
- AVG MS Outlook Extension if you use Microsoft Outlook
- AVG Eudora Extension for QUALCOMM Eudora
- AVG Plugin For The BAT! for The BAT! e-mail client
- If you use any other program (Outlook Express, Incredimail, Mozilla etc.), please install the Personal E-mail Scanner plug-in.
Launch the AVG Control Center,double-click the E-mail scanner component. Here´s the list of Installed plugins.
