AVG 8.0 Technical FAQ » AVG 8.0 » Installation » First Installation
Once you have purchased an AVG product, you need to install the AVG program onto your computer. The installation consists of several steps, their description can be found bellow.
1. Downloading the AVG installation file
It is recommended to always use the latest AVG installation file when installing AVG. Using an old installation file may lead to downloading large update files immediatelly after installation. The latest installation package also contains fixes to the most recently discovered issues, minimizing the chance of encountering an AVG malfunction in the future.
In case you have an AVG Backup CD and do not want to install AVG from the Internet, please visit FAQ 941.
- AVG installation files can be downloaded from our website:
AVG Internet Security 8.0
AVG Internet Security 3-Pack Edition 8.0
AVG Anti-Virus 8.0
AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall 8.0
- Click on AVG 8.0 for Windows to start the download.
- When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
In case you encounter any problem while downloading the file, please refer to FAQ 940 for more information.

Once the installation file is downloaded, run it by double-click on the file. Please note that it may take several seconds before the installation begins.

- Confirm the license agreement to continue with installation (or decline it to end the installation).
- Choose the type of installation (use the default selection if you are not sure what to choose).

First, check your computer with the vcleaner.exe utility. This utility is able to clean/remove most known of viruses that are known to cause installation problems. It isn’t necessary to install this utility, just save it on your PC and run it.
You should check your computer this way:
- download the vcleaner.exe utility
- reboot your computer into the Safe mode (if necessary)
- double-click on the downloaded file to launch it
- please wait until the test finishes and restart your computer
After checking your computer with vcleaner.exe, you can begin installing AVG. We strongly recommend installing AVG using the latest installation file, which can be found in the Downloads section of our website.
When the installation is complete, please update your AVG, to be sure that the latest virus definitions are in place.
When installing AVG 8.0 on a Terminal Server, it is generally not needed to proceed differently than on workstations. There is only one component in AVG which will run separately for each user - the AVG Tray application - and its effect on the system performance is minimal even when running in multiple instances. However, in case there are some other server applications running on the Terminal Server, it is recommended to skip installation of the AVG component that could affect their functionality:
AVG Web Shield
This component affects all HTTP, HTTPS and PROXY communication, since it scans communication on all respective ports/sockets. If there is a web server, proxy server or ISA server running on the Terminal Server, please install AVG without the Web Shield component.
When Web Shield is not installed, the AVG Toolbar can not be installed as well.
AVG Personal E-mail Scanner
The Personal E-mail Scanner captures and scans all communication on ports 110 and 25 (POP3 and SMTP) by default. In case there is a POP3/SMTP E-mail Server installed on the Terminal Server (or any other application communicating on these ports), it is recommended to skip installation of this component.
To install AVG without these components, you can either run the Custom installation and manually choose which components you wish to install, or use the following parameters:
- installation without Web Shield
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_HttpScanner - installation without Personal E-mail Scanner
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_EMC
These parameters can be combined to achieve an installation that suits your Terminal Server use.
